A cyclic relay or cyclic timer is used for the periodic switching of electrical loads (such as lights, fans, etc.) or for feeding control signals in automatic monitoring or control systems (for example, to switch on an emergency flashing light or sound signal). This cyclic timer can be useful in organizing automatic ventilation processes, opening and closing windows, periodically switching heating or ventilation, lighting, or rotating an advertising sign.

If the relay is configured so that its switching and pause times are symmetrical, it can be used, for example, for gradually connecting some electrical devices in situations of current/power limitation (heating elements, heat-producing generators). The presence of a changeover contact allows the cycle to be started either as a pulse or a pause.
